Lucas Stephen Carney - Born Tuesday 6th July 2010

Monday 5th July 11.45pm Steve woke me to ask 'what is that noise?', I soon realised it was my mobile phone vibrating. I had barely fallen asleep but it took me a few seconds to focus on phone which displayed Ben and Jess calling.  With my heart racing I answered the phone to hear Jess exclaim with great excitement in her voice, 'Mum my waters have broken'.  She so wanted not to be induced and with her little man not due till the 10th this meant that almost certainly he would be here 4 days early :-)

Lucas minutes after being born

They were just waiting from Grandma Liz to arrive to look after Jack and then Ben drove Jess to the hospital.  I struggled to go back to sleep thinking about Jess and how things were going and if she was managing to have a natural labour meaning no pain relief, again this is something she really wanted to do.

Jack was so excited to see and hold his brother

I was awoken again at 6am by Jess calling to say that she was about 4 centimeters dilated and because of that they were happy for her to continue on her own without being given pitocin.  She said the contractions were getting stronger and she hoped to have a baby by lunch time and yes no pain relief had been given.

So I got up and pottered around initially struggling to put my mind to anything, but then I got a message over google chat from Ben to say he would keep me posted, so I didn't move from my computer.  Some time after 9am Ben told me that things had progressed quickly, but I didn't realise how quick until he called at about 9.45am minutes after Lucas was born at 9.39am to tell me and that he would call back in while to tell me more details. So about half an hour later he called back to tell me he weighed 7lb 15oz (the same as Jack) and was 20 and a half inches long and baby and Mum were doing fine.

An hour or so later Jess called to relay the whole experience to me and I think it's safe to say she was on a high and so happy that she did it drug free. To read more about Jessica's birth experience click here

And this one both 4 days old

Ben quickly sent photo's of our new grandson who at this point didn't have a name, but non the less he was just perfectly gorgeous. Jack was very happy that his brother had arrived and was eager to see him.

That little face says it all

The next day Jess and Ben announced that they had named their son Lucas Stephen; I thinks it's safe to say Steve was pretty stoked at this. Lucas also has dark hair like Steve.

Lucas 1 week old

I'm now in Denver (well Morrison to be precise) visiting with Jess, Ben, Jack and of course Lucas. I arrived on Sunday and leave Saturday and I'm so enjoying my cuddles with both Lucas. I'm also doing some fun things with Jack, like wrestling and pillow fights, boy he is tough, going to the park and today we went to the movies.

This photo of Jess, Lucas and me was taken by Jack!

Sadly Steve and Beth have to wait till the end of the month when we will all come back for Lucas blessing on August 1st.

And this one
